Hair Trends For Summer 2019
In 2019, it’s all about self-care, expressing gratitude, and treating people with kindness. By promoting and encouraging a healthy mind and body, we’re better able care for ourselves and others. This year, hair trends for colors and styles are all focused on warm, rich colors and healthy, naturally beautiful hair, as opposed to highly processed colors or harsh products that can cause dryness or damage. Rose Gold
While this trend will likely begin to fade this year, it’s undeniable that rose gold is still EVERYWHERE. A fun way to incorporate this current color obsession into your hairstyle is with a temporary rose gold hair wash. Try this one by Kristen Ess, which lets you experiment and vary the intensity of the tint to create a subtle rose gold color that usually lasts for 2-3 washes.

Buttery Blondes
Ashy blondes have been popular for a while now, but in 2019, the trend is definitely leaning toward buttery, warmer blondes. Soft, golden tones enhanced by pearlescent accents are likely to be huge this year.
Stylist Rebecca is also a fan of the shadow root, which occupies the space between a balayage and traditional highlights. It’s brighter than a balayage, but creates a softer root that blends your highlights to create a balayage look with less outgrowth.
Natural Curls
For textured and curly hair, it’s all about embracing your hair’s natural curl and texture. “To chop or not to chop is the question,” says stylist Peppers, a Certified Ouidad Curl Specialist. The biggest focus for textured hair this year is health. Be kind to your curls, and rock a more natural look.
Box braids are also a top trend for protective styling. They’re a beautiful way to care for your ends, reduce shedding, and promote hair growth. They’re also incredibly versatile, and provide a lot of room for creativity and personal expression through different colors and accessories that express your unique style while still nurturing your hair.
Soft Red and Rich Ginger
If you’re eager to explore a new color, red is going to be massively popular this year. Stylist Ashara explains that it’s not a “violent red,” but rather a more coppery, natural ginger tone. You can vary reds to give your look movement and dimension, like this stunning look she created for a client.

Foilyage
As balayage techniques continue to evolve, we are seeing the emergence of a new trend called foilyage or foilayage. This particular process was developed by colorist Hitomi Ikeda from NYC’s Louis Licari Salon, and incorporates traditional foil highlight techniques into the hair painting method of balayage. Foilyage techniques produce brighter, more solid ends while lifting the color at the crown without the extra heat and processing strength required for a regular balayage. This enhances the brilliance and vibrancy of the final color, while still achieving a blended, natural look, like this one created by stylist Peppers:
Curtain Bangs and ‘70s Shag Cuts
Short haircut trends this season are blunt, above-shoulder bobs that are all one length, with no bangs, and a little bit of beveled graduation – none of the dramatic stacking we’ve seen in previous years.

For longer or medium hair, longer, shaggy layers and curtain bangs are in. Curtain bangs, also called fringe, hit right at the cheekbones, and are typically accompanied by light bangs across the forehead. A great example are these bangs by stylist Cindy.
Textured Styling
This year, it’s all about loose movement and texture. To achieve this look, first use a light mousse on your roots, then blow dry straight, adding volume to the crown of your head to give a messy, textured effect.
Once your hair is dry, use the biggest curling iron you have (we’d recommend a 1.5” barrel) on wide sections of your hair, alternating the directions of your curls. This will create curls that have a natural, lived-in look, rather than the perfect spiral/mermaid curls that have been popular for a while.
Experiment with any products that will give your hair natural movement as well as texture and hold, but be careful when using salt sprays, as overuse can dry out your hair.
