Meet our new Director Of Education.

We are pleased to announce that Michelle has been promoted to Director of Education.

Michelle has been with Hoshall’s Salon and Spa for over 27 years and has been training and leading our Hoshall’s hair team for many of those years.

Michelle has trained all over the world and her love and dedication for her craft is an inspiration to all who meet her.

We asked Michelle a few questions so you can get to know this amazing woman just a bit better.

Tell us about one of your favorite instructors you ever had, and why?

My favorite instructor is Barbara O’dneal. She seriously taught me everything I know. She instilled in me the importance of being on time, productive and always using my time wisely.

What is your most inspiring hair story?

I don’t know if it is the most inspiring, but it is probably the greatest lesson I learned of what not to do. We had a world-renewed educator instructing at the salon and he used me as a model. He demonstrated a razor cutting technique. He razored up my hair so bad, as the whole salon watched it happen. I had a terrible mullet razor haircut after that.

What did you learn from that experience?

He was being showy. Don’t be showy.

What do you love most about teaching?

What I love the most about teaching is when I see a light bulb go off within the stylist. When they understand what I am teaching.

What do you wish people knew more about the hair industry?

Well after Covid we really saw how important hair is for people’s morals. And they really do feel better when they look better. So we are more personable than just about your hair. It is a whole livelihood for sure.

What is something you wished someone told you when you started your hair career?

I don’t know that I expected that it would be this great. It is the most amazing job career in the world. You get to talk to people all day and you get to have great camaraderie in the salon with your peers. Personally, I don’t think you can get that with every industry, any other industry.

What is your favorite out-of-work downtime activity?

HIKING !!!! I am at six hikes this year, and I’ve hiked to a waterfall every weekend. In celebrating my 50 th birthday I am going to be doing 50 hikes this year. I think I can do it by July, my birthday month. I have some big hikes planned. Half Dome, Clouds Rest. I am going to save Mount Tallac for my birthday weekend.

What is your favorite recipe?

This scalloped potato dish is from a client, but I added a few things and transformed it into a great breakfast casserole that I love to serve on Christmas morning.

Scallop Potatoes:

  • 1 bag of frozen shredded potatoes/ thawed

  • 2 cans of cream of potato soup

  • 16oz sour cream

  • 2 cups cheddar cheese, I always add way more

Bake at 350F for an hour

For the breakfast version, I add

  • A package of sausage cooked on a skillet

  • 12 eggs whisked in a bowl and then pour everything into a casserole dish

  • Bake at 350F for an hour then take the foil off bake for an additional 25 mins.

What is your favorite quote?

I have two:

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results
— – Albert Einstein Source
I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear
— Dr. Martin Luther Link Jr.
